Professional’s Perspective: An Inside Look at Founders Club at Pawleys Island

PGA Head Golf Professional Tom Vanhoogen gives you an inside look at one of Myrtle Beach Golf’s most unique designs, Founders Club. Named the 2011 Golf Course of The Year by the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association, Founders Club provides an enjoyable coastal-feel experience:

Tom Vanhoogen, PGA Head Golf Professional:

We’re here at Founders Club. They’re going to experience something very different than they’ll experience at any other golf course here in Myrtle Beach. It’s going to be a fun experience. We got a lot of challenges, but it’s still a great golf course for all skill levels. When they designed the golf course, what they created was, they have cart paths around the greens and the tee boxes. And then, waste areas to surround all the fairways. I think number 12 is a fun par five. It’s designed with a split fairway, middle of the fairway just has a row of pot bunkers. So, you can choose either side of the fairway to go after. And then, your approach shot, you have to go over a natural pond that we have out here to an elevated green.

So, it is a three shot hole, but all three shots are challenging. Three holes have unique characteristics. There’s some courses you might play, and it’s hard to remember what hole was number three or six. Out here, you can clearly explain, “Hey, do you remember that hole with the split fairway, or the par three that was downhill with the water in front of it.” So, it’s very easy to explain each hole, and they’re all very different… Good weather, great hospitality, and just a wonderful golf course.
