Pawleys Plantation Golf Club has long been regarded as one of South Carolina’s prettiest golf courses, and now The Discoverer, an emerging travel site, has named the Jack Nicklaus design as the best course in the Palmetto State.

The Discoverer Blog wrote a story called “The Best Golf Course in Each State” and the popular travel site said of Pawleys:

“Island greens, moss-draped oaks, and large waste bunkers are waiting for avid golfers in Pawleys Plantation on this Jack Nicklaus course. Here you’ll find the best golf of the Founders Collection, a group of courses in the area that represent the premier golf experiences of Myrtle Beach. Just watch out for alligators sunning in the bunkers or lurking in the ponds.”

The Discoverer, which features weekly email newsletters and nearly two million visitors each year, has more than 300,000 fans on Instagram.

Pawleys has long been one of the Palmetto State’s most popular courses, challenging players to hit a multitude of shots to attack the acclaimed layout. The inland, front nine plays through pine tree-lined fairways to well-guarded greens, rewarding precision ball-striking and power on a layout that plays to course rating and slope of 71.6/140 from the 6,209-yard white tees.

The back nine is defined by a tidal marsh that comes into view on six of nine holes, highlighted by the unforgettable par 3 13th. Playing to a peninsula green that is surrounded on three sides by the tidal marsh, the tee shot on No. 13 is as daunting as any in the area. The green is small and the wind is nearly always blowing, adding to the challenge.

Natural, Lowcountry beauty is what many golfers remember after a round at Pawleys Plantation, and deservedly so, but just as impressive is the way the Nicklaus course has continued to get better with age, a fact highlighted by the Discoverer.com honor.
